2009 Ned's Mammoth Rock Race - 10K Trail run
Labor Day, Monday
- September 7, 2009
8:00 am
Mammoth Creek Park.
The Mammoth Rock Race 10km is a signature event of the Eastern Sierra. Started in 1998, a small gathering of local runners put their fitness levels to the test, and founded a Mammoth tradition.
The race is mostly on gorgeous single track trail that winds uphill to bring runners under the majestic Mammoth Rock.
The High Sierra Striders and the High Sierra Triathlon Clubs have jointly organized the race since 2005 and are proud keep the tradition going.
Ned Schemenauer: This year’s Rock race is dedicated to the memory of Ned Schemenauer who died of Leukemia in 1947 at the age of 6. Back in Ned's day being diagnosed with this blood disease was usually a death sentence. Even as recent as 25 years ago, only 4% of children diagnosed with the most common form of childhood Leukemia survived. Today, 87% of children with Leukemia will live!
Ned was High Sierra Striders member Tom Schemenauer’s brother. Tom was born one year after Ned died and has raised funds for the Leukemia and Lymphomas Societies Team in Training several times at the San Diego Rock and Roll marathon. While Ned's Mammoth Rock Race is not a TNT sponsored event, you may find more information about their program at www.teamintraining.org.
The Schemenauer family deeply appreciates Ned being honored in California’s highest 10k, Ned's Mammoth Rock Race, and hopes you have a fantastic day in the beautiful Eastern High Sierras!
The following details from the 2009 race have been kept for information purposes only.

COURSE: The course starts from Mammoth Creek Park, then onto Sherwin Creek Road (4WD) where it leads to the single track Rock Trail. The first rest stop is located at the trailhead. Heading south and then west, the trail winds it’s way steeply uphill and then levels off to a gradual incline and eventually under the Mammoth Rock. Photos will be taken from this point. The single track trail ends on Old Mammoth Road (back to asphalt). The second aid station is located here. Now, west of the start the course winds fairly steeply downhill and then to a gradual downhill finally back to the park.
There will be a post-race breakfast served for all racers as well as raffle prizes, age-group prizes and first place overall awards.
DONATIONS: Keeping the tradition going, this year we at the Mammoth Rock Race 10km will donate a portion of our proceeds to the Mammoth High School Cross Country teams. In years past we have donated upwards of $1500. This monetary donation went to new uniforms and helped pay for traveling expenses of both boys and girls cross country running teams. Our goal this year is to increase the donated amount two fold.
A portion of the remaining proceeds will benefit the High Sierra Striders and High Sierra Triathlon Club, two non-profit organizations founded to promote health and fitness in the Eastern Sierra Community thru running and multi-sport training.
This event is under special use permit with the Inyo National Forest.
