Course Information
Below is a description of the course that can be used with Mammoth Mountain’s Bike Park Trail Map to trace the course. Basically, the first 25k is a loop clockwise around the Mountain. The course begins at Mammoth Mountain’s Main Lodge and heads east along bike trails toward Canyon Lodge and then up to the top of the Mountain. The remainder of the course follows hiking trails to the west down the backside of the Mountain to the Main Lodge. The second loop heads out and back along these hiking trails first starting up the heart of the Mountain to McCoy Station and then across its face to its western rim, featuring spectacular views of the Minarets.
We are working on getting a map on the website. But until then, it is possible to follow the route on the Mountain’s map with the directions below.
Race Course Subject to Change
The race course is subject to change as we get on the mountain and examine the course after the winter and the snow has melted. If it does, we’ll update this information.
Mammoth Mountain’s Bike Park Activity
Please note that the Mammoth Mountain Bike Park will be open on race day. However, the bike park opens at 9 AM (race starts at 6:30 AM) and runners should be off the bikes trails that are part of Ultra course by 11 AM at the latest. The last bike trail that is part of the course, Skid Marks, will be closed to bikers until after all runners get to the top of the mountain (around 10:30 AM).
Once at the top of the mountain, the race course will be solely on the hiking trail where bikes are prohibited. There will be several intersections where bikers and runners will cross paths but they will be clearly marked and signed for ample warning. All bikers will be notified of the Ultra race when they purchase their tickets for the day.
50k racers may drop down in distance upon returning to the start/finish line area after the first 25k loop. 25k racers may not switch to the 50k race after completing the first 25k loop. The first 25k is a perfect loop around the mountain. The second 25k is more or less an out and back on the hiking trail back up to the top of the mountain. There will be running racers coming and going on this trail so use caution and be courteous.
